The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Change Comes After Mixed Response
Brinkman steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming initial reveal last fall.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified staff about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a more defined direction.
The president stated that the team is now overhauling the project with a revised vision, aiming to better meet community desires.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
The news follows a similar step taken by the publisher in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise development group.
Below is the full text from the president's communication:
Team—
I know you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a message, I stated the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative creators we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to persist.”
Through your commitment and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The player input from last fall’s the game playtest was revealing. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the need for a sharper vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the criticism to mind and revamped the title with a refreshed goal - one that’s ready to achieve its promise to our players.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To further the incredible progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome the new hire as the new Director of the team. After a period of talks, he officially joins us on the specified date.
Ben’s management and experience in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having dedicated the last 15 years developing and overseeing some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.
Please join me in receiving him soon. We are all excited to continue seeing the evolution of the game in the weeks to come.
The President
Experience of the New Head
The appointee currently holds the role of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at major gaming companies in various development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Information and Concept
Project Ethos was revealed in October 2024 in conjunction with a public demo. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the description explains. "Challenge the opponents with fresh skills, risks, and obstacles that shift every session. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, put it on the line, and pray your team can achieve the highest spot? The option is in your hands."
The game lacks an official release date or platforms, but players can look forward to additional details as creation advances.
