Colombia's President Says 'I Shall Return to Arms Again' should US Intervenes Militarily.

The US President along with Colombia's president have turned up the tone of their war of words, heightening strains bilaterally following American military units struck Venezuela to remove Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He operates cocaine mills and cocaine factories and his time is running out," Trump remarked.

Escalating Rhetoric coupled with Claims

Talking to reporters over the weekend, Trump suggested comparable military action against Bogotá, asserting the country is “very sick too” and led by an unwell individual who likes making narcotics and trafficking it to America."

Although Colombia stands as the world’s largest producer of cocaine, authorities have found no indication linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way connected to the illicit industry.

A Deteriorating Alliance

The country has long been a staunch collaborator of the US in the struggle against drug trafficking and enjoyed cross-party backing in the US capital, however, the relationship have deteriorated dramatically after Trump was elected.

The nation's illicit drug economy is largely controlled by criminal organizations like the Golf Clan, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and dissident factions of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members demobilised subsequent to a historic peace agreement.

The President's Defiant Response

Upon being questioned if armed intervention comparable to Venezuela was a possibility regarding Colombia, Trump responded: "That seems like a good idea to me personally."

Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who disarmed in the 1990s, firmly denied these allegations. "I am no illegitimate nor am I a narco," he declared.

"He comments without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he wrote online.

"If US bombs target peasants, they will become numerous insurgents in the hills. And if they detain the president, whom many of the population loves and respects, they will unleash the fierce spirit of the people," he admonished.

From Insurgent to Leader

He passed part of his youth as a member in the left-wing M-19 guerrilla group though it is believed to have ever engaged in fighting. After demobilizing, he took part in drafting a new constitution in the early 90s subsequently becoming an influential politician. He served as mayor of the capital city prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I made a vow not to touch arms again ... but for Colombia I shall resume weapons once more," he affirmed.

Reinforced Protection along with Broad Condemnation

Colombia's defense chief announced that the president’s security detail had been reinforced.

A segment of Colombia’s conservative opposition have sided with Trump, however, leaders from across the political spectrum have rejected the possibility of an invasion against their nation.

Bilateral and Economic Strains

American authorities withdrew Petro’s visa following he urged American soldiers to ignore unlawful commands. In October, it placed financial sanctions targeting Petro, his wife and several key allies.

At the same time the US was building up its troop levels in the Caribbean and targeting suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces have also conducted strikes against vessels in Pacific waters adjacent to Colombia.
