Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
