At least 35,000 people might be affected, cautions the United States embassy

A significant security compromise in the Somali digital visa application system potentially disclosed sensitive details pertaining to many thousands of applicants, including American nationals, the United States diplomatic mission in Mogadishu has cautioned.

The embassy reported obtained credible reports that "unidentified hackers" breached the Mogadishu administration's electronic visa system, likely endangering data from at least 35,000 individuals.

The compromised files distributed through digital channels contain full names, images, dates of birth, marriage information, home addresses and electronic mail addresses, as stated in a United States official announcement released on Thursday.

"This information compromise remains active and might reveal any sensitive details submitted to this platform," British authorities has also warned visitors.

"Evaluate the dangers when considering application for an electronic visa required for visiting Somalia."

Administrative Action

Somali authorities have remained silent on the breach. But the government has moved visa processing away from evisa.gov.so to the new system etas.gov.so, without providing an official explanation.

"Although Embassy Mogadishu is unable to confirm whether an individual's data is included in the compromise, individuals who have applied via the digital application platform could be impacted," the official communication declared.

Territorial Consequences

The updated visa process requires every visitor, incorporating applicants from the autonomous region of the breakaway region and the partially independent area of the northeastern region, to apply for entry visas through digital means.

Commentators state visitors have encountered additional charges in specific areas, equivalent to repeated fees.

Political Context

The northern territory, that announced sovereignty in the early nineties, governs itself via separate governmental bodies but has not been internationally recognised. Mogadishu authorities insists that the area continues to belong to its jurisdictional area.

The claimed security incident contributes to long-running tensions involving central government and Somaliland administration over control of aviation space. Even though Somalia re-established complete authority of its airspace in the past decade, Hargeisa administration continues to contest the arrangement.

Current Developments

The dispute intensified recently when Somaliland's President Abdirahman Irro stated the northern territory would reject Mogadishu's electronic visa and instructed that airlines need to acquire permission from Hargeisa before entering the region's aviation space.

However prominent aviation companies have chosen not to process individuals without Somalia's e-visa approval.

Recently, the northern region's top diplomat the foreign minister reaffirmed that "every person entering Somaliland will obtain travel authorization at the point of entry", declaring Mogadishu's digital application process lacked security and cautioning that "personal information might be obtained by the hands of extremist groups" because of employing the platform.

Aviation Challenges

The impasse has caused some travellers destined for Hargeisa stuck in transit hubs after being denied boarding because they didn't have Mogadishu's digital permit.

Hargeisa's air transport representative, the transport official, has informed news organizations that the regulations - initially declared in recent months - were implemented on the tenth of November.

He said carriers that refuse might be directed to divert, and stated numerous flights were previously redirected.

Airspace Control Conflict

Video evidence released by Somaliland's aviation ministry reportedly displays regional aviation officials issuing instructions to global airline crews - a move celebrated domestically as a demonstration of Somaliland's autonomy.

Nevertheless Mogadishu's air transport department insists it possesses exclusive regulatory authority regarding the Mogadishu Flight Information Region (Flight Information Region), encompassing the whole nation's airspace. Officials have directed all aircraft to ignore any guidance issued by sources besides central government.

It warned that not adhering to national and worldwide air transport standards could create safety risks and result in "significant legal repercussions".
