Advocacy Group Claims to Have Extracted Millions of Audio Tracks from Spotify

An activist organization has claimed to have scraped a vast number of songs from the popular streaming service and is preparing to publish them publicly.

Potential Impetus for Artificial Intelligence Development

Observers said the seeming data breach could aid AI companies searching for material to train their models.

An entity known as Anna’s Archive said it had obtained 86 million audio tracks from Spotify and 256 million entries of metadata such as performer and album names. Spotify, which carries more than 100 million songs, stated that the leak did not represent its full inventory.

“We have located and disabled the malicious user accounts that were involved in unlawful scraping,” said a Spotify representative.

The Swedish service, which has more than 700 million users worldwide, added that an investigation into unauthorized access identified a third party collected public metadata and employed illicit methods to circumvent DRM protections.

Group's Declared Goal and Concerns

Spotify does not think the music acquired by Anna’s Archive has been made public yet. Anna’s Archive, which is recognized for providing links to copyright-infringing books, wrote in a blog it wanted to create a ‘preservation archive’ for music.

The group asserted the audio files accounted for 99.6% of all music listened to by Spotify users and would be shared via ‘torrents’, a method of sharing large data files online.

“Naturally Spotify doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a fantastic start,” commented Anna’s Archive, which frames its mission as “preserving humanity’s knowledge and culture”.

Model Development and Intellectual Property Battleground

Ed Newton-Rex for protecting artists’ copyright, said the breached music would likely be used for training artificial intelligence systems.

“Training on illegally sourced data is unfortunately widespread in the tech sector, so this accessed music is highly likely to end up instructing AI models,” he said.

The Anna’s Archive site makes references to LibGen, a vast online repository of pirated books that has allegedly been leveraged by the parent company of Facebook to train its AI models.

The co-founder of an AI startup posted on the professional network that members of the public could in theory “build their own private free version of Spotify”. The executive added it could also enable tech companies to “educate models on modern music at scale”.

Intellectual property law has become a key issue between creatives, writers and creatives on one side and tech giants on the other.

Policy Considerations and Responses

In the UK, artists and writers have protested against a ministerial suggestion to let AI companies use protected work without permission unless the owner signals. Virtually every participant to a government consultation on the proposal has backed artists’ apprehensions.

The secretary of state for technology, research and technology told parliament this month there was “no clear consensus” on the matter, noting that ministers would “take the time to get this correct”. The administration has committed to make regulatory plans on AI and copyright by March 2025.
